Recommended for these needs

Speechify pricing comes down to two numbers for the text-to-speech reader: $29 a month on monthly billing, or $139 a year on annual billing, which is about $11.58 a month. The Free plan costs $0 and stays free, but it is capped at 10 voices that Speechify itself calls robotic and a top speed of 1.5x. This guide lays out what each Speechify plan includes, what the annual price really saves, how refunds work, and which plan fits which listener.

Prices are in USD and were checked on Speechify's own pricing, free-vs-premium, refund, Studio and blog pages on October 25, 2026. Where Speechify's pages disagree with each other, this guide says so instead of picking one number.

Quick answer

  • Speechify pricing: Free $0, Premium $29 per month, or Premium $139 per year (about $11.58 per month). Studio (voiceovers) is a separate subscription at $100 or $300 per year.
  • Annual is the better deal: 12 monthly payments cost $348, so the $139 annual plan saves $209, or about 60%.
  • Free plan: 10 basic voices, speeds up to 1.5x, text to speech only, and a 5-file library on iPhone.
  • Best for most daily listeners: Premium on annual billing. Try the Free plan first if you listen only now and then.
  • Refunds: a 7-day window for unused annual plans; monthly plans and Apple or Google Play purchases are not refundable by Speechify.

Is Speechify free? What the Free plan includes

Yes, Speechify has a permanent free plan with no credit card required and no automatic conversion to paid. Speechify's pricing and free-vs-premium pages list these limits:

  • 10 voices, described on the page as robotic sounding
  • Listening speed up to 1.5x
  • Text to speech features only
  • A 5-file library limit (listed for the iPhone app)
  • Basic support by email

Not included on Free: Scan & Listen, AI summaries and chat, Google Drive, Dropbox and OneDrive integrations, voice typing, AI podcasts, the voice AI assistant, and offline MP3 download. Speechify's own student article also mentions monthly caps on premium voice minutes for free users, without giving the number.

If you only need a PDF or web page read aloud at a normal pace, Free covers that. If you want faster listening or natural voices, it will feel limiting quickly.

Speechify Premium: monthly vs yearly price

Premium is $29 per month on monthly billing. Speechify's blog states the annual price as $139 per year, about $11.58 per month. The pricing page toggle is labeled "SAVE 60%", and the arithmetic holds: twelve monthly payments are $348, so the annual plan saves $209.

BillingCost for 12 monthsPer monthRefundable?
Monthly$348$29.00No (monthly plans are non-refundable)
Annual (speechify.com)$139$11.58Within 7 days if barely used
Annual (Apple App Store listing)$139.99$11.67Final sale per Speechify, subject to Apple

The monthly plan only makes sense if you need Premium for a few weeks, for example during exams or a research sprint. Even a 5-month stretch of monthly billing ($145) costs more than a full year on the annual plan.

Premium voices, languages and speed

The Premium plan card lists 1,000+ natural voices, 60+ languages and listening at 5x. Other Speechify pages are less consistent: the free-vs-premium comparison table says 200+ high-quality natural voices, the blog says speeds up to 4.5x, and another section says up to 900 words per minute. The safe reading is that Premium offers a large voice library and listening far above 1.5x, but the exact counts differ by page. Check the plan card in the app before paying if a specific voice or language matters.

Premium usage cap

Speechify's blog states Premium includes "up to 1,000,000 Premium voice words per month, guaranteed through 2026". That is far above most readers' needs, but it means the plan is not described as unlimited without a cap.

Speechify discount: what is verified

Speechify's official pricing and blog pages show no promo code or coupon. What they do show:

  • Annual billing: about 60% less than paying monthly, the largest discount available without student verification, per Speechify's student article (updated July 14, 2026).
  • Verified students: 25% off Premium through UNiDAYS, with Student Beans running similar offers. The same page says this brings annual pricing closer to $100.
  • US K-12 students: Premium at no cost through Speechify's education program, with academic verification.
  • Schools and districts: custom-quoted institutional licenses.

The Fieldnotes link in this guide does not add a discount. Speechify's own pages show no seasonal sale, so check the checkout screen for the price you will actually pay.

Refund and cancellation policy

Speechify's refund policy page (it carries no effective date) sets these rules:

  • Refund requests must reach Speechify within 7 days of the subscription date, including any trial period.
  • An unused annual Text to Speech plan qualifies if you used no more than 500 HD words.
  • Monthly, quarterly and discounted subscriptions are non-refundable, and there are no partial refunds after part of a billing cycle.
  • Subscriptions bought through the Apple App Store or Google Play are final sales from Speechify's side and fall under Apple's or Google's payment policy.

The page does not explain how to cancel or how auto-renewal works. A third-party review notes that Speechify's Help Center describes a free Premium trial that does not bill you if you cancel at least 24 hours before it ends, but Speechify's pricing page gives no trial length. Treat the trial as something to confirm at checkout.

Buying on the web at speechify.com is the only route where a refund is possible, so it is the safer place to start an annual plan.

Speechify review: what ratings and reviewers say

This section summarizes public ratings and reviews. It is not hands-on testing.

SourceRating or verdictDate checked
Apple App Store (US)4.7 out of 5 from 527K ratingsOctober 25, 2026
TrustpilotTrustScore 4.7 from 7,221 reviews; 83% five-star, 8% one-starOctober 25, 2026
Reedsy (for authors)3 out of 5 overall, pricing 4 out of 5Published December 15, 2025

Reedsy's reviewer found the free voices clear enough for proofreading but robotic, and the premium voices "surprisingly natural", while stating that nothing beats human narrators for a professional audiobook. Listed downsides include mispronounced invented names, awkward reading of headers and footnotes, and lag with large files.

On Trustpilot, praise centers on support and quick cancellations. Complaints in October 2026 include charges after a free trial and a yearly renewal on a replacement card. The pattern is a familiar one for subscription apps: set a calendar reminder before any trial or annual renewal.

Which Speechify plan fits you

  • Occasional reader: stay on Free. 10 voices and 1.5x cover basic read-aloud needs.
  • Student with heavy reading: annual Premium, and check UNiDAYS or Student Beans first for the 25% offer. US K-12 students should ask about the education program.
  • Dyslexia, ADHD or low vision: annual Premium is the plan with the natural voices and Scan & Listen. Speechify and Reedsy both point to these groups as core users.
  • Writers who revise by ear: annual Premium; Reedsy lists editing by listening as a main use.
  • Creators who need a voiceover file with commercial rights: Studio Starter at $100 per year, not Premium. Studio's free tier excludes commercial rights. Fieldnotes' guide to free text to speech for commercial use explains what to check in a tool's terms.

Common mistakes before you subscribe

  • Buying monthly "to test": monthly is non-refundable and costs $29. Use the Free plan to test, then buy annual on the web.
  • Buying through the app store: Speechify treats those sales as final, and the store lists $139.99 for Premium rather than $139.
  • Expecting Premium to include Studio: they are separate subscriptions with separate credits.
  • Counting on a voice number: pages say 1,000+, 200+ or "dozens". Listen to the voices you plan to use first.

Speechify reads text aloud. If you want to speak and have text typed instead, Fieldnotes has a separate walkthrough of voice typing on Windows.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Speechify cost per month?

$29 per month on monthly billing, or $139 per year (about $11.58 per month) on annual billing. The Free plan is $0. Studio is separate at $100 or $300 per year.

Is Speechify worth the money?

For daily listeners who want natural voices and faster speeds, annual Premium at about $11.58 per month is a reasonable price for the feature set. For occasional use, the Free plan may be enough. It does not replace a human narrator for professional audiobooks, per Reedsy's review.

Can I use Speechify for free?

Yes. The Free plan has 10 voices, speeds up to 1.5x and text to speech only, with no card needed. Premium features such as Scan & Listen, voice typing and AI podcasts require a paid plan.

Is there a cheaper way to get Speechify?

Annual billing is the main saving, about 60% below monthly. Verified students can get 25% off through UNiDAYS per Speechify's student article, and US K-12 students may qualify for free Premium.

Can I get a Speechify refund?

Only in narrow cases: within 7 days, for an unused annual plan (500 HD words or fewer) bought on speechify.com. Monthly plans and Apple or Google Play purchases are not refundable by Speechify.

Is Speechify Studio included in Premium?

No. Studio is a separate voiceover product with its own plans and credits.

In short, start on the Free plan, and if you need natural voices and faster listening, buy Premium annually at $139 directly on speechify.com rather than paying $29 monthly.
