Windows already has a voice typing tool built in, free, activated with one keyboard shortcut. Most people asking about voice typing on Windows do not know it exists, or hit it once, found it lacking, and assumed voice typing on Windows just is not very good. The gap between "built-in" and "good enough for daily work" is where third-party tools like Wispr Flow come in, and the actual difference is narrower than the marketing suggests. All figures below were checked against official Microsoft and vendor documentation on 2026-09-26.
Windows voice typing shortcut and setup
Press Windows key + H with your cursor in any text box, on a hardware keyboard, or tap the microphone icon on the touch keyboard. It works identically on Windows 10 and Windows 11, per Microsoft's own support page, which lists both as supported versions.
Three requirements, all from Microsoft's documentation: an internet connection, a working microphone, and your cursor placed in a text field before you start speaking. Miss any one of these and nothing happens, which is the single most common cause of "it's not working" reports.
Voice typing windows 11 not working: the official causes
Microsoft's own troubleshooting page lists these causes, in this order, before anything else:
- Wrong or no microphone selected in Windows Settings.
- External microphone not properly connected to the PC.
- Microphone access blocked at Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
- Language pack not installed for the language you're trying to dictate in.
- Input level too low or too high, background noise, or a low-quality built-in mic. Microsoft's own fix here is to switch to an external headset or microphone.
- Wrong dictation language currently selected, fix with Windows key + Spacebar.
Notably absent from the dedicated troubleshooting page: "no internet connection" is not listed as a diagnosed cause there, even though the main how-to page states internet access is required. If everything above checks out and it still fails silently, connectivity is worth testing directly.
How to change the dictation language
Press Windows key + Spacebar on a hardware keyboard, or use the language switcher in the taskbar corner. Voice typing supports over 50 languages, including regional English variants (US, UK, Canada, Australia, India, New Zealand), plus Chinese, French, German, Spanish, Japanese, and Korean.
Voice commands for punctuation and editing work in supported languages too: say "period," "comma," "question mark," or "new line" to insert punctuation, "delete that" to remove your last input, "select that" to select it, and "stop listening" to end dictation.
The privacy question nobody reads past the marketing for
Windows Voice Typing is not offline. Microsoft's own documentation states: "Voice typing uses online speech recognition, which is powered by Azure Speech services." Your voice is sent to Microsoft's servers to produce the text, every time, regardless of settings.
What Microsoft does clarify: "Voice data is sent to Microsoft only to provide the service and create text transcriptions," and "Microsoft does not store, sample, or listen to voice recordings without your permission." Contributing voice clips to help improve the service is opt-in, not required. If you're signed in with a work or school account, voice data sharing for improvement purposes is not available at all, though the feature itself still works. The one thing you can clear yourself is your local custom word list, via Settings > Privacy & security > Inking & typing personalization; there is no documented self-service way to view or delete voice data already sent to Microsoft's servers.
Wispr Flow on Windows: what's actually different
Wispr Flow runs as a Windows system-tray app, downloadable from the Microsoft Store or as a direct installer. You press a hotkey, speak, release it, and the text lands in whatever application has focus, which sounds identical to Windows Voice Typing's "works in any text box" behavior, and functionally is. That is not the differentiator; the actual differences, per Wispr's own pricing page, are AI-cleaned output, custom dictionary and snippets, dictation in 100+ languages versus Windows' 50+, and a Notetaker meeting-transcription feature Windows Voice Typing does not have at all.
System requirements (Windows): Windows 10 or 11 on an x64 processor. Windows on ARM and Snapdragon devices are explicitly unsupported. Dictation needs 8GB RAM recommended and about 200MB free storage. Notetaker needs more: 16GB RAM and 2GB free storage.
| Plan | Price | What's included |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 100+ language dictation, 2,000 words/week desktop, limited Notetaker, dictionary/snippets |
| Pro | $15/mo ($12/mo annual) | Unlimited dictation, extended Notetaker history, team dictionary, priority support |
| Growth | $23/mo ($18/mo annual) | SSO/SAML, HIPAA BAA, admin controls, usage reporting |
| Enterprise | Custom | SCIM, audit logs, managed deployment, dedicated SLA support |
Notetaker is Mac and Windows only, not mobile. And like Windows Voice Typing, Wispr Flow is not offline either: its own data policy states plainly, "Transcription always occurs on the cloud. This is the best way for us to provide accurate, low latency transcription." Neither tool keeps your voice fully on-device. Where Wispr differs on privacy is control: a Dictation Cloud Storage toggle lets you turn off persistent transcript/audio storage, model training is opt-in only (a legacy "Privacy Mode" that blocked training is still honored for users who had it on), and enterprise accounts have model training permanently disabled with no way to turn it on. Wispr's policy also states, "We never sell your data," and "Wispr maintains agreements that no third party AI providers can use your data for model training."
One number that is not published anywhere official: an accuracy percentage. Wispr's pricing and docs pages make no numeric accuracy claim, so treat any "95% accurate" figure you see elsewhere as unverified.

Other Windows dictation options, briefly
- Google Docs voice typing works in Chrome, Edge, or Safari on Windows (Firefox is not listed as supported). Dictation covers 100+ languages, but formatting voice commands work only in English, and both the account and document language need to be set to English for commands to function.
- Dragon Professional (Nuance, a Microsoft company) is Windows-only for its flagship desktop edition. Its official pages do not list a price directly; third-party retailers show Dragon Professional versions ranging roughly $308 to $700, which should be treated as retail pricing, not an official Nuance quote.
- SuperWhisper is officially supported on Windows 10 and 11 (64-bit), correcting the common assumption that it's Mac-only. One purchase license covers both platforms. Several features remain Mac-first and are not yet on Windows: file sync across installs, custom app folder location, hold-shift auto-send, simulated keypresses, and integrations with coding agents like Claude Code and Cursor.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Windows voice typing shortcut?
Windows key + H, with your cursor in a text box. It works the same way on Windows 10 and Windows 11.
Why is voice typing not working on Windows 11?
Check, in order: the correct microphone is selected in Settings, an external mic is properly connected if you're using one, microphone access is allowed under Privacy & security, the language pack you need is installed, and you're not in a noisy environment. If everything checks out, confirm you're actually connected to the internet, since voice typing requires it even though Microsoft's troubleshooting page doesn't list it as a cause.
Does Windows voice typing work offline?
No. It requires an internet connection and uses Azure Speech cloud services to process your voice. There is no offline mode.
Is Wispr Flow better than Windows' built-in voice typing?
Not offline, not "works anywhere," since Windows Voice Typing already does both of those. Wispr Flow's real advantages are AI-cleaned output, a shared custom dictionary for teams, wider language support (100+ versus 50+), and a meeting-transcription tool Windows lacks entirely. Whether that's worth $15 a month depends on how much you dictate and whether Notetaker matters to you.
Is SuperWhisper available on Windows?
Yes, officially, on Windows 10 and 11 (64-bit). It was Mac-first for a period, so a few features are still Mac-only, but the app itself runs natively on Windows.
Bottom line
Start with Windows key + H. It is free, requires no signup, and covers 50+ languages with basic punctuation commands. If it feels clunky for daily work, that clunkiness usually traces to one of six documented causes, not a fundamental limitation. Move to a paid tool only once you've confirmed the built-in option is actually failing you, not just under-configured.
