A dash cam hardwire kit looks like a generic accessory: a long cable, a small voltage box and a few fuse taps. It is not generic. The camera makers disagree on which kits work with their cameras, the wire colors are not the same across brands, and the battery cutoff voltage ranges from about 11V to 12.5V depending on the kit.

This guide compares the official hardwire kits from VIOFO, Vantrue, 70mai, Garmin, Nextbase and Rove. Every spec below comes from the manufacturer's own manual, support page or store, checked on 2026-09-23. Amazon prices were checked on 2026-09-24 and will move, so treat the checkout page as the final word.

Do you need a hardwire kit for parking mode?

Usually, but not always. A hardwire kit does two jobs. It gives the camera power while the engine is off, and it cuts that power before the car battery drops too low to start the engine. Whether it is strictly required depends on the camera.

  • Rove says it outright on the R2-4K page: "the ROVE Ultimate USB Type-C Hardwire Kit is required for the parking mode to work."
  • Garmin says older models such as the Dash Cam 45, 55 and 65W must be connected to the Parking Mode Cable before they can record while parked. Newer X-series models need "a constant power source." The Dash Cam X310 is an exception, with a 'Run on Battery' setting that uses the camera's own battery.
  • Vantrue asks for constant power and names two ways to get it: "constant power like power bank or hardwiring to the car battery fuse box."
  • Nextbase recommends a hardwire kit instead of the cigarette lighter cable if you plan to use Parking Mode.

So check your camera's own page before buying. If it lists a specific kit as required, that settles the question.

Dash cam hardwire kit comparison by brand

The table lists the kit each manufacturer sells for its own cameras. Prices are the manufacturer's store price on 2026-09-23.

VIOFO HK4USB-C3 (battery, ACC, ground)11.8 / 12.0 / 12.2 / 12.4V, selectable$17.99 to $25.99 by fuse set
70mai UP03USB-C311.8V, fixed$27.99
70mai UP06USB-C311.8 / 12.1 / 12.4V, selectable$35.99
Vantrue Universal 11.5ftUSB-C, Mini USB or S1 versionNot confirmed. Vantrue's Type C kit manual shows 2 wires, but this kit's name says ACC11.6V, fixed$24.99 (list $29.99)
Vantrue 5-Level (3-Lead ACC)USB-C311.6 / 11.9 / 12.2 / 12.5V listed$34.99 (list $39.99)
Garmin Parking Mode CableUSB-C or micro USB version3Not stated in the manual$49.99 (USB-C), $34.99 (micro USB)
Nextbase Hardwire KitMini USB211.0V (manual) or 11.2V (support page), fixed$29.99, shown out of stock
Rove Ultimate 3-LeadUSB-C3Four settings, lowest 11.8V$39.99 (list $49.99)

Two gaps are worth knowing. Vantrue calls the 5-Level kit five levels, but its page lists four 12V values. Rove says its kit has four settings but only names the lowest one. Garmin's manual does not give a cutoff value for its Parking Mode Cable at all.

Dash cam hardwire kit USB-C vs mini USB vs micro USB

Start with the plug on your camera, not the kit. 70mai spells out the rule for its own range: "If you own a dash cam with a micro USB port, the UP02 is the hardwire kit you need," and the UP03 or UP06 for USB-C. Its UP03 manual adds that the kit "does not support main devices that uses a USB-A connector."

A matching plug is not the same as compatibility, though. This is where the manufacturers disagree most:

  • Vantrue's Universal kit page says: "It doesn't work for other Dash Cams, it only work for Vantrue dash cam." The same page also calls the plug compatible with all Type C dash cams, so the listing contradicts itself. The explicit restriction is the safer reading.
  • 70mai's UP03 manual limits the kit to devices "manufactured under the 70mai brand," plus Xiaomi and Mijia devices made by 70mai.
  • VIOFO's support page says: "We always suggest sticking to original cables and adapters."
  • Rove goes the other way and says its kit works with "most other dash cams with a USB Type-C connector."

Even within one brand the fit is narrow. Vantrue's 5-Level kit page says it does not work with every Vantrue camera and lists specific models. Nextbase notes its kit will not work with the Piqo. The practical rule: buy the kit your camera maker lists for your exact model.

Wire colors are not the same across brands

Most three-wire kits use red for constant battery power, yellow for ACC (the circuit that is live only when the ignition is on) and black for ground. VIOFO and 70mai follow that pattern in their manuals, and Rove's product page describes the same layout.

Garmin reverses it. The Parking Mode Cable manual lists "Black - Ground / Yellow - Battery 12 V / Red - Accessory 12 V." If you follow a generic video that says 'red goes to the always-on fuse' with a Garmin cable, you will swap the two circuits. Read the label or manual that came with your kit before you connect anything.

Two-wire kits are different again. Nextbase's kit has one positive lead and a ground, with no separate ACC wire. Its manual recommends a switched fuse for normal driving and a permanent live fuse only if you want the camera to record while parked.

What the ACC wire actually does

The ACC wire tells the camera the engine has been turned off, so it can switch into parking mode on its own. VIOFO describes it as the function that "will switch the dash camera into parking mode automatically when the vehicle engine is shut off." 70mai's wiring table shows what happens without it: with only battery and ground connected, the camera keeps normal recording while parked rather than entering parking surveillance. 70mai also warns that some cars cannot pass a clean ACC signal, in which case the kit cannot pass it on either.

Which fuse to use when you hardwire a dash cam

You need two fuse slots for a three-wire kit. The manuals describe the same test:

  1. With the ignition off and the key out, find a slot that still has power. That is your constant (battery) slot.
  2. Find a slot that has power only with the key in ACC or on. That is your switched (ACC) slot.
  3. Check both with a circuit tester or multimeter, not by guessing from the fuse map alone.

Avoid safety circuits. Vantrue's manual says reading the fuse map "ensures you don't pull the airbag fuse." VIOFO's install guide says some slots "govern critical systems like airbags, stability control programs, and the horn, which should not be tampered with," and points to circuits such as the radio or sunroof as generally safer choices. Nextbase suggests a circuit like the heated rear window for the switched feed and says the fuse used should be rated no more than 20 amps.

Dash cam hardwire kit fuse tap sizes

Fuse taps (sold as add-a-fuse or add-a-circuit) have to match the fuse type in your box. VIOFO notes that "Fuse boxes and fuse types vary not only between car models, but also on year and variant," and that in its experience the Mini is the most common type. The kits ship with different sets:

  • 70mai UP06: standard, Mini, low profile and Micro2 taps, two of each, with 5A fuses.
  • Vantrue: Mini/Low-Profile, Mini, ATO and Micro2 add-a-circuit holders.
  • VIOFO HK4: sold with a choice of fuse sets, including an 8-piece full set.
  • Nextbase: standard (ATO/C) and mini (ATM) taps only. Its manual uses 'Micro' to mean a low profile mini fuse, and says you can still use the mini tap for that type but need to source another mini fuse. That workaround is not about Micro2 fuses, which other makers list as a separate type.

Pull one fuse from the slot you plan to use and compare it before ordering. If your car uses Micro2 fuses and your kit only includes Mini taps, you will need an extra part.

The ground wire matters as much as the fuses. VIOFO recommends a screw or bolt with a direct connection to the body and a continuity reading under 0.1 ohm. 70mai and Rove both name a poor ground as a cause of the camera repeatedly restarting.

Dash cam hardwire kit with low voltage protection: which setting?

Low voltage protection is the cutoff that stops the camera draining the battery. Fixed kits give you one value. Adjustable kits let you trade parking recording time for starting safety.

VIOFO's advice is to pick the highest setting when in doubt: "The highest level 12.4V/24.8V is your safest choice." It also notes "about 0.3V tolerance of voltage detection in hardwire kit." If the battery still runs down, VIOFO suggests the highest cutoff plus a parking timer of about two hours. 70mai's UP06 waits for the voltage to stay below the chosen level for more than three minutes before cutting power.

A fixed low cutoff, such as Nextbase's 11.0 to 11.2V, allows the most parking time but leaves the least margin. If your car sits for days, or the battery is older, an adjustable kit set high is the more conservative choice.

Dash cam hardwire installation: DIY or professional?

The manufacturers mostly lean toward a professional. Garmin's manual carries a caution that it "strongly recommends having an experienced installer with the proper knowledge of electrical systems install the device." 70mai says: "Please ask a professional technician to perform the installation." VIOFO's HK4 manual says "Professional installation is recommended."

Nextbase is more relaxed. Its install guide says hardwiring "can be done by any competent DIY user" and "can take just 20 minutes," while also listing 'May need professional help' as a downside. It offers its own installation service.

Whichever route you pick, a few rules from the manuals apply:

  • Work with the ignition off (Nextbase, 70mai).
  • Test the camera before you tuck cables into the trim (VIOFO).
  • Do not cut an over-long cable; tie it up instead (70mai).
  • Do not cover the voltage box with carpet (VIOFO).
  • Use the parts supplied. Nextbase says failure to use them "will void the product warranty."

On vehicle warranties, none of the camera makers we checked says hardwiring voids a car's warranty. The closest statement is Garmin's for its OBD-II cable, which tells owners to defer to their vehicle's warranty provisions. Ask your dealer if that matters to you.

Dash cam hardwire kit on Amazon: official listings

If you buy on Amazon, the listings below are sold under each brand's own Amazon store, checked on 2026-09-24. We left out unbranded 'universal' kits because two of these makers say their cameras should use their own kits.

  • VIOFO HK4 with the 8-piece fuse tap set: $25.99. The cable alone is $17.99.
  • 70mai UP03 (fixed 11.8V): $27.99.
  • 70mai UP06 (adjustable, with voltage display): $35.99.
  • Vantrue 11.5ft USB-C kit: $24.99.
  • Rove Ultimate USB-C kit: $29.99, against $39.99 on Rove's own store on 2026-09-23.

Prices change often. The price at checkout is the one that counts.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use any USB-C hardwire kit with my dash cam?

Not safely as a rule. Vantrue and 70mai both limit their kits to their own cameras, and VIOFO recommends original cables. Rove is the only maker that openly markets its kit for other brands' USB-C cameras, and Vantrue's own listing contradicts itself on the point. Use the kit your camera maker lists for your model.

Will a hardwire kit drain my car battery?

It is designed not to. The kit watches battery voltage and cuts power at the set level. VIOFO says that as long as the kit works normally, battery drainage is not a concern. A higher cutoff and a parking timer add margin.

Why does my dash cam keep restarting after hardwiring?

70mai and Rove both point to a poor ground. Move the black wire to a bare metal chassis bolt and confirm continuity with a meter.

Is a hardwire kit the same as an OBD-II cable?

No. An OBD-II cable plugs into the diagnostic port instead of the fuse box. Garmin's Constant Power Cable is one; it shuts down after 10 minutes if the battery drops below 12V and is not compatible with commercial vehicles that use a J1939 connector.

Bottom line

Pick the kit in this order: your camera's plug, the kit its maker lists for your model, then the cutoff you want. If you have a choice, an adjustable kit set to its highest cutoff is the safest starting point. Before connecting anything, read the wire colors on your own kit, because Garmin's are reversed, and match your fuse taps to the fuse type in your car.
